Change It All
What if? What if Alaskan Natives were to never have entered this land, and Russians were to never had sold the land to Americans? What if..? So say such a thing as the land bridge were to never have existed and natives were to have never found a way to such a place. Leaving this land undiscovered and barren. Until of course explorers were to have found such a land. Let's say though, the currents were to change and none of the European Explorers were to find such place. Leaving the land at the mercy of the Russians. With no implications such as the natives. The Russians would then be offered the change to grow in the trade business, possibly then taking over the land they had discovered. Leaving the U.S. at no chance of buying such territory.
With the Russians controlling it, they could do as they please, as well as have their on gold rush and keeping the 'greedy' Americans out of it. World War II though would cause some problems for them though, such as the Japanese and seeing the Russians had kept to their own business during the war, would they have fought back for land or just then decided to sell it to the U.S.? The land was no more use to them, but just another reason to earn conflict they wished not to have with the Japanese. They would sell to the U.S. who would then go back on track but this time their would be no one in the land besides the remaining few Russians who had decided to stay and become U.S. citizens. Who would then possibly become a part of the U.S.'s war front in the brand new territory. Seeing as the purchase though was a gamble in the first place, buying it when they did would change just about everything. So lets say they all make it through the war with few deaths on the new territories side. Would the one's left request for full rights and want to become a state or would they wish to become their own country?
Just to add a little more crazy to the pot. Lets have them decide to become their own country. With Alaska as it is, trade would become the new countries best friend. Seeing as Alaska does not have very many natural ways of sustaining a huge population not without the help of others. So the country would sooner of later become dirt poor and possibly become a dictatorship. Leading to many nasty wars that would end with the countries destruction. Creating a barren waste land that once could have been something amazing.
With the wrong turns and simple tweaks to it's past it became a trash heap, 'a could have been'.
